The Sail2help charity, which helps young people at risk from suicide and mental health issues, and is supported by Wescom Group, has visited the Channel Islands to highlight its vital work.
Sail2help raises awareness of mental health issues that lead to suicide among young people and supports bereaved families. As well as supporting Papyrus, the UK’s main suicide prevention charity for young persons, Sail2help organises Escape Days on the Solent and encourages those wanting to take up marine careers.
Wescom donates proceeds from our Flares Amnesty days to Sail2help and provides Pains Wessex flares for the charity’s boats.
The Pains Wessex flares are a key part of Sail2help’s marine safety equipment, says Tim. “When equipping our yachts we always ensure when it comes to safety equipment we use the best; and in my opinion that when it comes to flares, firstly you need to carry them and secondly I wouldn’t go anywhere else other than Pains Wessex to buy them.”
Captain Tim Davies set up Sail2help after his eldest son George took his life. The charity uses sailing to show young people that there is more to life than they might think there is.
Tim has recently returned from the privately funded cross-channel sailing weekend, during which he met the Lt Governor of the Bailiwick, carried out media interviews and spent two days afloat supporting vulnerable families.
The former Royal Navy Captain, who is now Managing Director of AVRO Yachting, says, “If I do nothing else this year, the Sunday we spent with a battered Mum and an abused 16-year-old who had attempted to take her life after interference by the father, and her other three children, that one day was worth all the money we have raised so far this year alone.
“It was just brilliant to see the strain come off the mother’s face and see her smile as her children squalled with delight as the waves sploshed over the swim platform as we motored from an anchorage at Sark where we had provided lunch in a safe haven, in both senses of the term, back to St Peter Port.”
