Rescuers in Belgium have called for kitesurfers to carry flares and other safety gear.
A video shows how the Voluntary Blankenberge Sea Rescue Service (VBZR) saved a kitesurfer in trouble at Zeebrugge with the help of a lifebuoy one day in February.
The kitesurfer was seen to be distressed by a resident in a nearby apartment and VBZR rescuers responded. The kitesurfer put a lifeboat around him and swam towards the lifeboat. Once aboard, he was transported to Blankenberge.
A VBZR spokesperson advised kitesurfers to carry a mobile phone in a waterproof bag and two hand flares.
