Parachute flares assist night time rescue

Parachute flares assisted the rescue by Girvan lifeboat

Parachute flares helped rescue teams find a person in the water at darkness in Ireland.

Late one night in November, Girvan’s Shannon Class all-weather Lifeboat was asked by Belfast Coast Guard Operations Centre to search for a person in the water.

The RNLI Girvan team was also joined by Coastguard Rescue teams from Girvan & Ballantrae, Police Scotland, Scottish Fire & Rescue Service and Scottish Ambulance Service shoreside.

RNLI Girvan crewmembers put on drysuits to enter the water. Girvan Lifeboat used searchlights and white illuminating parachute flares to light the area.

The casualty was quickly located by Police Scotland officers and paramedics also carried out checks.
