Lone fisherman rescued from water thanks to flare alerts

An RNLI Lizard lifeboat

A lone fisherman was rescued in Cornwall after being in the water for an hour when his boat capsized, thanks to flare alerts.

The flares were spotted one day in June by members of the public who made multiple reports to the coastguard about an emergency around Lizard Point. Coastguard rescue teams from Mullion and Porthoustock were also asked to help.

Thanks to the flare alerts being seen, RNLB Rose launched within minutes. The crew found the lone fisherman around three miles south of Lizard Point clinging to the bow of his upturned fishing boat.

He was taken into the lifeboat and given medical attention before being brought to the RNLI Lizard station to await paramedics.

The lifeboat was then relaunched to locate and recover the open deck vessel so it did not cause a hazard for other marine traffic.

The RNLI crew thanked all who attended and said they were very relieved for his safe return home. The photo is by Terry Thirlaway.
