Illuminating flares help vessel tow across bar at night

United States Coast Guards have used illuminating flares to help cross a hazardous bar in a nighttime rescue.

Station Oregon Inlet’s 47 Motor Life Boat crew responded after reports of two sailors in trouble on board a 35ft disabled sailboat, off the coast of Avon, North Carolina.

It found the sailboat and set up a tow using a Kevlar bridle to take the disabled boat back. Near the bar, another 47 boat crew assisted.

A Station Oregon Inlet spokesperson says, “Both crews used illumination Parachute Flares. The light of the flare allows the crews to spot dangerous swells and breaking shoals.”

The sailboat was taken to Wanchese and moored on the dock.
