Flares aid rescue of merchant crew

The merchant ship sank in the Gulf of Gabes

The crew of a merchant ship that sank in Tunisia has been rescued after the coast guard responded to flares.

The seven crew members from Georgia, Turkey and Azerbaijan, on the Xelo were saved in the rescue by the Tunisian Navy in the Gulf of Gabes, in southeast Tunisia. They were taken to hospital for checks and subsequently released, reports Al Jazeera.

The coast guard spotted the flares after the ship, travelling from Equatorial Guinea to Malta, started sinking in bad weather. It is believed the tanker was carrying diesel and efforts are underway to limit environmental damage.
