A marine safety event at Largs Yacht Haven in Scotland included advice about distress flare operation and displays including Pains Wessex products.
The lifejacket clinic and water safety event was held one day in July. It involved Ardrossan Coastguard Rescue Team, Largs RNLI Water Safety Team and Fundraisers and Face2Face Fundraisers. Guidance was given on proper flare use, handling and storage.
RNLI crew demonstrated how to maintain personal lifejackets and keep them functional, check them for wear and tear. It also included simple maintenance tasks including replacing gas bottles and firing heads.
A total of 41 lifejackets were checked during the event. At least 75% failed the basic safety checks and two of them had fired cylinders so would not activate.
A range of water and coastal safety advice was shared by the RNLI and also Coastguard teams. The RNLI Water Safety Team Stand included Pains Wessex flares in the display.
Claire McRae, Water Safety Volunteer at Largs RNLI, says, “A lifejacket is a vital piece of lifesaving equipment for those taking part in water-based activities. It can be easy to assume lifejackets are always up to the job, but like all safety equipment, they need to be regularly checked. Someone’s life could depend on it.”
