Crew of stranded yacht rescued after flare signal

The Utopia IV

Fishermen on a disabled boat were rescued by a good Samaritan yacht crew after firing a flare signal.

The Chief Officer of the Utopia IV noticed a flashlight SOS signal early one morning in June, 65 miles off Cape Canaveral, Florida.

The engine of the six-metre fishing boat failed the two fishermen were travelling to the Bahamas and the vessel drifted for a day.

As the Utopia IV approached, the fishermen fired a flare to signal that they needed rescuing. Its crew radioed the coast guard.

The fishermen swam to the Utopia IV and were taken aboard. They were later transferred to a coast guard cutter and taken ashore.
