Check your flares expiry date, says RNLI

Rowers and RNLI in training exercise

Make sure you regularly review the expiry date on each of your marine flares, the RNLI advises.

During man overboard training conducted by Clwb Rhwyfo Sion Cwilt Rowing Club and New Quay RNLI crew in November, Dylan Price, New Quay RNLI’s helm spoke about the importance of carrying up-to-date marine distress signals.

“Using our life-sized mannequin the rowing club simulated a man overboard incident and under our instruction, the rowers gained experience in manoeuvring the boat and recovering a person from the water.

“We also gave advice on the importance of carrying the correct safety equipment and means of calling for help. Life jackets should be regularly inspected and flares should be checked for expiry date.”

The structured training took place in New Quay harbour. It involved one of the rowing club’s longboats and New Quay RNLI’s inshore lifeboat, the Audrey LJ.
