Flare diverts RNLI to real-life incident

A RNLI crew preparing for a safety demonstration in Devon was diverted to a real-life incident by a red flare.

Appledore Lifeboats was preparing its all-weather boat to take part in a demonstration at Westward Ho! during the Fish Festival weekend, when crew spotted a red flare in the Taw River area around Chivenor.

On investigation, they found a motor boat at anchor with an anchor chain too short for the rising tide and its bow dangerously low in the water.

In the end, the crew managed to sort out their problem with the help of friends on another fishing vessel and the Appledore boat returned to station just in time for the all-weather boat to attend the demonstration.
